20 Oct 2019

Batswana jewellery designers have been encouraged to take advantage of the Lucara jewellery competition as a platform to showcase their creativity.

Briefing the media on Friday, Lucara Botswana managing director, Naseem Banu Lahri said the competition, which started on October 18 and closes on November 29, was open to all Batswana engaged in designing or working with precious metals and gemstones as well as anyone involved in a creative discipline

She said the entrants were expected to design a signature jewellery of neck and earing piece while the winning design would be manufactured by a local manufacturer agreed to by the promoter and designer.

“The winning piece will be worn on one of the famous and high profile glamorous coveted red carpets such as Oscars or Grammys in 2020.

The winning designer will also get an opportunity to attend and experience the glitz and glamour of the red carpet event with a chance to meet the celebrity showcasing their piece,” she said.

Furthermore, Lahri said after being worn on the red carpet, the piece would be auctioned off to raise money to build a school in Letlhakane as part of the company’s corporate social initiative.

She said the school initiative was meant to empower the Letlhakane community and ensure sustainability in the community.

Lahri therefore encouraged designers to apply authenticity to their designs, adding that the competition offered recognition by the jewellery industry and consumer audiences with publicity throughout the contest.

She said the competition was organised with the aim to honour those who create pieces with the highest levels of creativity, artistry, style and excellence in jewellery design.

The competition is open to Botswana citizens aged 18 years. Entries are to be submitted by email to admin@leapfrog.co.bw by November 29.

The aspiring participants must provide a cover note with the full names of the designer creating the design submitted, email address, contact numbers, valid Omang and a brief description of inspiration of the piece in less than 150 words; and the design must be eligible and saved in PDF. ENDS
