26 Aug 2019
Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general, Mr Mpho Balopi has pleaded with BDP members to revive all party structures in an effort to disseminate the party’s manifesto message to Batswana.
Mr Balopi was speaking at the launch of Gaborone South prospective parliamentary candidate, Mr Dumezweni Mthimkhulu.
He said in order to disseminate the BDP message, all party structures at all levels should be mobilised for the cause.
Mr Balopi pleaded with democrats to ensure that party structures were active and functional towards the upcoming general election, adding that a thorough audit must be undertaken in every constituency to ascertain the status of every structure.
He said it was vital that every cell, ward, branch and regional structure must function at maximum level because the BDP organisational structure was designed in such a way that the party should not be lacking in terms of foot soldiers to mobilise the electorate.
Mr Balopi said since the party’s first victory in 1965, the BDP had been returned to office on account of the ability to respond to the needs of the citizenry.
“We have always preached a basic message, easily understood by our people that as a government we stand for development and improvement of the life conditions of Batswana. Since we assumed stewardship of this nation, the life of the average Motswana has undergone tremendous positive change,” he said.
He noted that since the attainment of nationhood, Batswana consider BDP the party of governance as it continued to be the custodian of every Motswana’s dream and aspirations for a better future.
Mr Balopi said President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi was ready to lead the transformation and marshal the BDP to enable Batswana to achieve prosperity.
The BDP secretary general cautioned Batswana to guard against opposition aligned rumor mills who spread malicious allegations aimed at tarnishing the good BDP name and its leadership.
He pleaded with Batswana to develop the culture of finding the truth in whatever news or allegations they were fed.
Mr Balopi cautioned BDP members not to bask in the glory of previous election victories, but to soldier on with vigorous campaigns to lure new members to the partyl, particularly the youth.
BDP Women’s Wing chairperson, Ms Dorcas Makgato urged party members to demonstrate high levels of accountability and reminded democrats that they should be cognisant of the fact that they were servants of the people.
She indicated that the BDP government remained steadfast in improving the livelihoods of Batswana.
She pleaded with voters to keep the BDP in power as the party manifesto was anchored on plans to achieve economic transformation.
For his part, Mr Mthimkhulu vowed to work hand in hand with the electorate to ensure that the constituency was developed. He said Gaborone South had the potential to be a shining example of how community involvement could unleash opportunities and possibilities to transform lives.
“The foundations have been laid, but we need to accelerate by being more focused and deliberate in how we utilise the resources that are available to Gaborone South constituency to improve lives,” he said.
He said he was proud to be aligned to a reputable party that had turned the country’s fortunes around since the country attained independence. Ends
