Film production players vow to grow industry
22 Aug 2019
Some players in the film production industry have vowed to up their game in order to take the industry to greater heights.
They said the industry was very critical as it could contribute significantly to the economy by creating employment opportunities for graduates roaming the streets.
They aired their views during the ongoing consultation on the review of the Cinematography Act of 1970. The review process aims to create a conducive environment for regulation and the growth of film industry in Botswana.
Some participants appreciated efforts by government to engage stakeholders to review the act, saying other countries were step ahead.
Worldwide, they said, the culture and creative industries potential in contributing to economic growth and job creation, was being recognised.
Chairperson of Botswana Film Association, Bokang Ditlhokwa hailed government for reviewing the act, noting that it was an indication that their efforts as players were recognised. “This calls for us to take our sector and production seriously because it can benefit us more and the nation at large,” he added. He described the industry as a multi-billionaire Pula sector capable of creating more jobs for the youth.
Ditlhokwa called on all players in the industry to join forces with government and develop the industry.
He shared a brief history of the industry in Botswana, stating that it dates back to the 1850s as it was established before the country got its independence, but by then it did not benefit the local players as expected.
Secondly, he said the act was not properly implemented and managed hence people were doing as they please making millions.
In the current situation, he said players were still not benefiting to the maximum, as they were not attracting better posts in film production hence the establishment of the film association in 2012 to address the needs of the film sector in the country.
“We believe that if our sector can be regulated and supported, we can create more than 1 000 jobs,” he added.
He appreciated that a few developing economies had successed in growing the film and television sector, notably in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Canada and United Kingdom among others.
Ditlhokwa said it was their intention to embark on a benchmarking mission to successful countries in and outside Africa.
An official from the district commissioner’s office, Joe Garebagae concurred that the industry was a catalyst to the economy and underscored the need for players to up their game.
He appreciated that the act was outdated as many things happened since its execution and its review was necessary.
Garebagae said the industry was critical as it provided entertainment to Batswana and urged players to deliberate on new phases applying in the industry with an aim to make best productions and eventually grow the sector. ENDS
