02 Jul 2019
President’s Day competitions have been hailed for affording artists both seasoned and upcoming, a platform to step onto the international stage to showcase their talent and creativity.
Policy Specialist - Arts and Culture in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development Dineo Phuti said in an interview during the Traditional Instruments category competitions that there had been tremendous growth in the arts sector as artists were now using their talent to earn a living.
On the Traditional Instrument category, she said this year they observed some creativity which was unique as artists presented their work.
The competitions date back to 2008, and she said over the years, they encouraged artist not to rely on government alone, but to market their talent by organising events which afforded them a platform to be noticed.
Phuti, however, noted that those who won at the national level were often invited to take part or represent the country internationally.
The traditional instruments category this year included, Segaba, Setinkane, and Katara and each category had eight participants. The judges were among other things looking at improvisation and variation by the performer.
Segaba Phillimon Marope from Motlhabaneng scooped position one, Gabanthate Malokela from Bobonong got position two while Segu Sekopane took third position.
