Spekere defies odds

New artists never have it easy in the music industry.
And Francistown-based rising rhumba star, Wabuya ‘Spekere’ Boitshepo of Spekere and Silver Stars group is no exception.
The 30-year-old Nlapkhwane-born musician said he had to endure challenges of lack of resources and rejection from studios.
However, Spekere never gave up on his dream to be a rhumba star.
He said his love for rhumba could be traced to 2014 when he fell in love with Frank ‘Franco’ Lesokwane’s music.
Spekere said in an interview that because of his undying love for music, he joined a rhumba group called Major and Danger Musica as a dancer and stayed with them for one and a half years before going solo.
He had Major and Danger Musica group as a mentor and he recorded his first single titled: Kgaitsadi Thando.
Spekere said despite success of recording his first single, all was not rosy as it did not do well.
He, however, said he did not despair, but went into Jay Black Production Studio in Francistown and recorded Ke bone sengwe.
“This song is taking me far. The love that people are showing to me whenever I sing it is amazing. Recently I performed it at Big n’Bold Bar in Monarch in Francistown and people went berserk over it. They didn’t want me to leave the stage, it was just humbling,” he said.
Ke bone sengwe, he said, was written to sensitise new lovers about visiting people they only met at night.
He noted that the song was inspired by the fact that many young people resorted to using muti if their relationships were not working.
Spekere said December was a successful month for him with numerous invitations that he had lined up.
He boasts of performing with some of his music genre’s greatest in Alfredo Mos, Oscar Chakabuya and Little Boy Shikito, among others.
Going forward, he said, he would like to feature industry heavy weights such as Franco, Charma Gal and Slizer.
He revealed that a seven-track album was on the way and that Batswana should expect it between August and September.
Spekere maintains a day job as a security guard. Ends
