30 Aug 2018

The annual Bahurutshe Cultural Day, which has been running since 2012, is scheduled to take place today(August 31) in Mogonye.

The event organiser, Moeng Thobega said the main objective of the event was to celebrate and embrace Bahurutshe culture.

The Bahurutshe tribe are found in Manyana, Mogonye and Bikwe.

He said the event  would include  the Xhosa culture since there were many Xhosa’s in Bikwe, which is closer to Manyana and Mogonye.

Furthermore, Thobega said they plan  to diversify culture with tourism since they had several natural resources which attracted thousands of tourists annually such as the Mmamotshwane Gorge at Mogonye and Mmasechele Hills in Manyana.

He said they wanted to boost their economy through tourism in order to undertake developments which could benefit all Bahurutshe residing in the region.

He said the event would include a cultural night where there would be dikhwaere and traditional dance to welcome visitors from Bahurutshe of Tonota and those from Motswedi in South Africa.

He further said they had also invited different dikgosi and other government officials. Visitors and guests would be served with traditional cuisine such as seswaa, bogobe jwa lerotse and others.

As for entertainment, Thobega said Mafitlhakgosi Traditional Troupe, among others, would perform during the cultural day.

When giving a brief history about Bahurutshe, Kgosi Robert Mangope of Manyana said Bahurutshe originate from Kurumane in South Africa, and that it was during the Tswana- Boer war that they fled to Botswana and settled at Dimawe.

He added that it was important for Bahurutshe to trace back their roots just like other tribes.

Kgosi Mangope also revealed that their desire was to build a monument at Dimawe to pay their respects and honour all the fallen heroes who died during the war and were buried at Dimawe.

He said after the construction of the monument, their plan was to celebrate Bahurutshe Cultural Day at Dimawe.

He encouraged Bahurutshe to attend the event in large numbers so that they could  learn more about their culture.ENDS
