Police arrest detain ballot-box kicker

A 38 year old man of Mabeleapodi has been arrested and detained for allegedly kicking a ballot box for a council seat during Botswana Democratic Party primary elections.
Though he did not want to reveal the names of the detainee, Serowe Police Station Commander Superintendent Patrick Molefhe confirmed the arrest and detention and said that the man will face a charge of common nuisance at the customary court .
The man has reportedly skipped the queue and forced his way into the polling area where upon being rebuked he kicked the ballot box in frustration and the ballot papers scattered.
At Majwanaadipitse, Superintendent Molefhe said that elections were disrupted after a gang threw stones and thereby forcing the polling agents to flee to Tshimoyapula.
The same delinquents pursued the polling agents and caused a stir at Tshimoyapula Primary School where the latter sought refuge.
He said that though the police were not expected to provide security at the primary elections his charges were duty bound to restore order as and when sought. It was at this instigation that the police intervened at Tshimoyapula where voting was reportedly stopped until 1am where presiding officer took a decision to call off the elections.
When sought to comment on the matter and the possible ramifications to the primary elections at Serowe North constituency, the returning officer Ms Annah Mokgethi expressed she was too busy to field questions at the time.
However, Botswana Democratic Party constitution article nine (f) states that, “Where an irregularity has occurred or the process of election has for unforeseen circumstances failed in any polling station, there shall be re-election in the whole ward if it were elections for a council seat, or a re-election in the whole constituency if it were elections for parliamentary seat.” ENDSA 38 year old man of Mabeleapodi has been arrested and detained for allegedly kicking a ballot box for a council seat during Botswana Democratic Party primary elections.
