Teachers welfare priority

Kgosi Gomolemo Molebatsi of Majwaneng says teachers are the backbone of the education system hence their welfare must be taken into consideration.
Mr Molebatsi said in interview recently that shortage of accommodation at Molebatsi Primary school was a serious concern, noting that some of the teachers had to travel long distances on daily basis to get to work saying it impacted negatively on their performance.
He said with crime statistics growing in the area, the teachers’ lives were at risk as most of them hitch hike to and from their residential places. Mr Molebatsi spoke greatly of the teachers’ dedication towards their work adding that the Village Development Committee (VDC) had made some efforts to renovate most of its houses with the hope that they would be able to house some of the teachers.
Councillor for Ratholo/Majwaneng, Mr Daniel Ookame said the construction of three houses meant to address shortage of accommodation for teachers in the village was in progress and would be built under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).
Mr Ookame said the houses were expected to be completed by the end of November.
Meanwhile, Molebatsi Primary School head, Ms Seamogano Jane said staying very far from school limit the time teachers spend with students.Ms Kane there were only three teachers’ houses, while five of the teachers stay in Ratholo and some had to rent in villages neraby.
This, she said impacted on the school performance. She said there were some students who needed extra lessons but it was not possible for some teachers to help them as they stay far. However, she said the school was adopted by Security Systems company, which had donated computers, stationery and other equipment that came in handy.She said the school had posted positive results ever since the relationship between the school and company started.
She further encouraged parents to take part in their children’s education and not to rely entirely upon teachers. END
