WUC improves water quality in Boteti

22 Jul 2013

Community leaders have been informed that the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) is engaged in projects aimed at improving water quality and supply in Boteti.

Water works engineer in Letlhakane, Mr Kutlwano Simon said on July 18 during an organised tour of the corporation’s infrastructure around Letlhakane that some villages in Boteti were faced with inadequate supply while some were supplied through bowsing.

Mr Simon said WUC appreciated the challenges faced by the community relating to supply of potable water adding that despite financial constraints, funded projects would mitigate the situation.

He said one of the anticipated projects was the southern cluster water supply projected to cost P190 million which would cover Mokobaxane, Mopipi, Kedia, Xhumo, Mmadikola, Toromoja, Rakops and Xere.

He said another proposed development was to connect the boreholes supplying the clustered villages to the electricity grid adding that  the generators used consumed a lot of fuel which was costly.

Mr Simon further said one of the funded and on-going projects was the sealing of leaking water tanks at Khwee, Motopi, Moreomaoto and Rakops. As for Mosu, Mmeya and Mokubilo, Mr Simon said another borehole had been identified at Nthane lands and would be interconnected to the system supplying the three villages to augment the supply.

Besides the anticipated Southern cluster water supply which was a long term project, Mr Simon said Toromoja that was supplied through bowsing was being connected to the Mopipi water supply.

Toromoja was the only village in Boteti, which received water through bowsers and it was costly and inconvenienced people.

With regard to upgrading water supply in Northern Boteti, Mr Simon said the villages would be clustered and get their water from Phuduhudu well field.  He said design of the project was complete and tender documents have been sent to Public Procurement and Asset Development Board (PPADB) for adjudication adding that it would also supply some villages like Chanoga in the North West District.

He said a treatment plant would be established at Motopi adding that more water would be drawn from the Boteti River to augment supply from Phuduhudu well field.

Mr Simon said one of the current projects aimed at conserving water was the installation of prepaid public standpipes. He said the project was being rolled out to all villages in Boteti and would be completed in August.  ENDS
