Government will build a tarred road to connect Ledumadumane and Mmopane this financial year. 

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, said the road will spur other developments, including water and electricity
connections. He said this during a kgotla meeting addressed by President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama at Ledumadumane and Mmopane on April 23.

For his part, Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) general manager for Gaborone Management Centre, Mr Mpheke Motshwaedi said it was difficult to connect water in Ledumadumane because the area was not serviced.

He, however, said WUC had increased the number of stand pipes to service residents.  He further pointed out that Ledumadumane residents experienced water scarcity because of the North South Water Carrier pipeline frequent ruptures.

For his part, President Khama rebuked the corporation for collecting P1 000 water connection fees from residents and then failing to deliver.

“Why did you collect money when you knew you would still not afford to connect them? By collecting their money you created an expectation that you will connect post payment. People want a service that you should provide, so please sort yourselves and connect people whose money you already have,” President Khama said.

Meanwhile, Kweneng District Council secretary, Mr Wazha Tema acknowledged that they had only five officers to attend to 58 000 people. “We are doing our best to augment our staff and provide them with transport,” he said.

MP for the area, Mr Sedirwa Kgoroba requested that Mogoditshane Sub Land Board be provided with more staff as it had a huge work load due to its proximity to Gaborone. 

He also urged the Ministry of Lands to expedite change of land use applications, especially for plots adjacent to the Gaborone-Molepolole highway so that the area could be turned into a commercial hub that will ultimately create employment for the area. ENDS
