19 Mar 2015
The multi-million Pula Palapye Bus Rank is expected to open soon following its handover to the owner, Central District Council (CDC).
Chief civil engineer for CDC, Mr Boitumelo Keikitse said in an interview after tour of the facility by CDC councillors that the bus rank is complete and has been handed over to CDC by the contractor.
He said the project comprises of 40 stalls, two waiting rooms for buses and combis, office space, multi-purpose hall and offices that will be occupied by the police, DRTS, Environmental and Bye Law departments.
He said the plan is to let the multi-purpose hall and office space to service providers such as Water Utilities Corporation and banks respectively, saying the council is still working on the official opening which will be communicated soon.
Mr Keikitse said the project was expected to be complete by October 2014 but suffered some setbacks after the council gave the contractor additional work which entailed constructing the drainage system, overlays and installing traffic lights.
He said the work was completed on March 14. For his part, CDC chairperson, Mr Peter William welcomed the project, saying it has brought a lot of local empowerment particularly that it is at the intersection of Palapye, Gaborone, Maun and Francistown.
He said the bus rank also has an open space which can be used to hold festivals and other social events as such Palapye Sub -council will be able to generate its own income. ENDS
