Overhead pedestrian bridge to open soon
17 Feb 2015
The Nelson Mandela High Way overhead pedestrian bridge will be ready for use in two weeks’ time.
Gaborone City Council’s principal roads engineer, Mr Khumo Manyathelo, said in an interview that the bridge will be opened to the public on March 3 and the two lanes of the high way will be opened as well.
Mr Manyathelo said the only thing to be done would be what is termed minor works such as painting of the road rails, re-construction of the pavement and cleaning of the area. He said everything went well as no accident was reported during the re-construction process.
Mr Manyathelo said the repair of the bridge came as a result of the destruction last year caused by the Excavator Hire truck which shifted the bridge and rendering it a risk, aadding that all the expenses were taken care of by the Excavator Hire insurance at a cost of over P1.9 million while the city council was monitoring the works.
He said by March 10, they expect everything to be completed including the minor works and cautioned motorists especially big trucks to always use roads with due care and diligence and read road signs. The overhead pedestrian bridge is used by residents of Extension 26 and Tshimotharo locations crossing the Nelson Mandela High Way. ENDS
