South East District councillors have been encouraged to promote the welfare of people during their five-year period in office.

The call was made by Kgosi Mosadi of Balete during the councillors’ orientation on November 24. 

She said there were various issues affecting the South East District community, which needed the intervention of all the district authorities, hence she pleaded with councillors to put the interests of their people and the district ahead of theirs.

Kgosi Mosadi, who is the council ex-officio, added that during the election campaigns, councillors had made promises to the electorate,  saying it was therefore time for them to deliver. Further, she encouraged the councillors to meaningfully utilise time allocated to them during council session to deliberate on issues which will add value to the community.

The Balete kgosi noted that the district was facing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, crime, youth delinquencies and drugs abuse. Although she is alive to the fact that councillors come from different political orientations and backgrounds, she said the council session has got no room for displaying partisan politics.

She said the council session gave them an opportunity to serve their community, hence they must utilise that moment.  Kgosi Mosadi further encouraged councillors to take advantage of the information communication technology in order to stay relevant and in touch with their electorate.

Further, she said the current councillors come at a time when there are signs that the economy is recovering and said they must therefore track the district development programmes.

For his part, SEDC council secretary, Mr Goleba Kgari encouraged the councillors to commit to their work and ensure that their tenure in office becomes fruitful. Mr Kgari told the councillors that during their five-year period, people would be expecting a lot from them, hence he said the councillors ought to deliver to their level best despite challenges such as shortage of resources.

The four-day orientation workshop was aimed at educating councillors on the business of the council and induct them on their mandate as community leaders. ENDS
