Kazungula can reap from bridge project
11 Sep 2014
Residents of Kazungula have been advised to come up with business ideas, which could enable them to benefit from the upcoming Kazungula Bridge project, which officially starts today (September 12).
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofo Molefhi gave the advise when briefing residents on the project at a kgotla meeting recently. He noted that some of the workforce from other countries would need houses to rent.
“They will also need their goods guarded and secure, therefore security provision is another opportunity,” said Mr Molefhi. He also noted that the workforce for the project would be sourced from both two countries.
“You must therefore work together to ensure that this project is run the way it has been planned,” he said. He urged them to jealously guard the reputation of their country by refraiming from any wrongdoing, which could tarnish their image as Batswana.
He said some of the skills that would be required may not necessarily be sourced from the Kazungula/Kasane area and said this should not cause any problems.
Mr Molefhi added that the bridge would have a railway component that would also ease the transport of goods to neighbouring countries via Kasane.
The deputy council secretary, Mr Thatayothe Balapi said they had reserved some space for small business owners to operate from, adding that health standards for those handling food could not be compromised.
The deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Victor Rantshabeng explained that labour laws for recruitment would be followed throughout the process and that they hope that everyone would be employed. ends
