Maun fire station to start operations
15 Jul 2014
The multi-million Maun fire station will soon operate because North West District Council has secured fire equipment worth more than P10 million.
The P31 million facility, which was completed in 2010, delayed operations because of lack of money to by fire engines. However, the council received two fire engines from Naledi Motors on July 14.
Mr Mzondik Moswete, the council secretary, assured Maun residents that the facility would operate as a full-fledged station because critical components such as fire-fighting equipment, workers and furniture were in place.
Mr Moswete said the council needed 14 fire-fighters but had been able to recruit only eight as they were scarce.
Apart from shortage of fire fighters, everything was in place for the fire station that was idle for four years to commence operations. He explained that lack of money made it difficult to find fire engines.
He thanked the suppliers for working round the clock to deliver the fire engines. He urged the council’s fire department to collaborate with the civil aviation authority in Maun, which had been handling fire emergency calls. ENDS
