Ipelegeng helps develop Tonota

15 Jun 2014

Ipelegeng programme provides relief while at the same time carriying out essential development projects, says the programme coordinator in the Tonota sub-district council, Mr Chandapiwa Mike.

Mr Mike who was briefing the sub-district council meeting recently, said they were implementing 108 projects of  which 15 were maintenance of government facilities, 22 debushing of roads and pruning of trees around the village, two being dam and culvert projects.

Other projects were vegetation control in government institutions, litter picking, maintenance of fence and fencing of playing grounds, construction and maintenance of drift fences. He stated that of all the 108 projects only 21 were complete and 51 were not yet started.

“There are four spill-over projects, two are between 26-50 per cent complete and the other two are between 51-75 per cent,” he said.  He said over P14 million has been allocated for the programme during the financial year 2014/15.

Mr Mike also said 2 862 people had been engaged between April and June 2014 which included 1926 females and 936 males, and within that number there were 1057 youth.

“Some of the challenges we face in this programme are that most of the materials for spill-over projects have not been procured, leading to people idling”, he said.

Commenting on the report, nominated councillor, Mr Trinity Bogacu said people who slept on the job should be fired regardless of whatever reasons they come up with stating that Ipelegeng workers should understand that the programme was just a relief. If they take it for granted, he said, they should leave.

Kgosi Radipitse of Tonota said he did not blame Ipelegeng wokers but rather their supervisors. ENDS
